Limbaugh undermines conservative values

By: American Decency Staff

As we reported last week, Rush Limbaugh was the featured guest on FOX’s latest “Family Guyâ€Â episode which aired Sunday night.  In the nine seasons it has been on, Family Guy has built a reputation for being crass, offensive, and very leftwing-oriented, but, according to the shows creator, Seth McFarlane, they have made fun of the right so much they thought they should give conservatives a little “face time.â€Â  And Limbaugh apparently jumped at the opportunity. One doesn’t have to look far to see the blatant bias of today’s media.  It’s bad enough when the media offers a false and derisive portrayal of principled Americans standing up for what they believe in, but having someone such as Rush Limbaugh, who is considered to be a leader among those principled Americans, help the media make fun of us didn’t really go over too well with me.  To be sure, there were a few light jabs at what I (and I’m sure Rush) consider to be leftwing idiocy, but there were plenty of laugh lines directed at offensive stereotypes of conservative beliefs to over-balance the scale. There were also, of course, several examples of Family Guy’s typical punch lines: Baby Stewie looking at “tasteful nudesâ€Â in the book store, the family dog, Brian watching “European Porn,â€Â and the dad, Peter’s, usual display of idiocy. But in spite of Rush’s insistence that he “comes out looking like a champ on this thing,â€Â the majority of the jokes were aimed at Republicans, Conservatives, and even Limbaugh’s audience. The plot of the episode is that hardcore leftist Brian, the family dog, becomes a fan of Rush Limbaugh and follows him around for a few days. After reading Limbaugh’s book, Brian tells Rush: “Talking to you now, I just want to find the right words to describe how much I agree with you.â€Â Rush: “I’ve got the words, Brian. ‘Thank you, Rush, for doing my thinking for me, cuz I lack the ability to think critically and independently.â€Â Brian: “Yes! That!â€Â Rush: “You should be proud of yourself, Brian; you sound like a thoughtful American.â€Â Moments before that conversation, Rush is signing books in front of his car. One of his fan’s states:  “Love the Hummer, Rush. How do you like it?â€Â Rush: “It is the best. I’m not saying you have to be gay to drive something else, but if you drive something else, you’re probably a guy who likes to pleasure other men sexually.â€Â Brian invites Rush over for supper and says this prayer over the meal, “Dear God who definitely exists, we your people, who have been on this planet for 6,000 years and not a second more, wish to thank You for this bounty and for keeping Congress predominately white through Christ our Lord, Amen.â€Â Over the meal, Rush and Brian describe to the mother, Lois, their dream of “Republican Townâ€Â in song: “everyone prays to a proper right wing God.â€Â Lois: “Republican Catholics?â€Â Brian: “Yes, indeed there are.â€Â Lois: “Republican Muslims?â€Â Brian: “Well, let’s not go too far.â€Â Lois: “no Muslims?â€Â Rush: “Eh, too many tall buildings.â€Â Brian: They’ve outlawed all abortions, late or early. It’s a sin we can’t abide.â€Â – At this point two mothers who’ve just had abortions are tied to the stake and burned Lois: “What if you find a fetus left abandoned?â€Â Rush: “We just take it and we jam it back inside.â€Â Brian goes off the deep end and goes to attack Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, “I’m here to strap you to a board, put a cloth in your mouth, and poor water over it to simulate the sensation of drowning. Yea! Traditional Values!â€Â The episode ends with Rush telling Brian that he’s not really a conservative; he’s just anti-conformist and has to rail against whoever is in power.  Brian replies, “I’m a conservative!  I support the death penalty to show people that killing is wrong!â€Â Rush: “You’re a liberal, Brian.  I mean, what about that 4 year old that was executed in Texas?â€Â Brian: “There was a 4 year old executed in Texas?â€Â Rush: “Not really, but you see, Brian? Your concern betrays you…â€Â Brian: “I suppose we shouldn’t be executing children.â€Â Rush: “You see? You’re not really one of us.â€Â Brian: “Oh my g–, Lois was right.â€Â Rush: “Right there. See the fact that you would give a woman credit for anything? It means you’re a liberal, Brian…â€Â Brian: “Does this mean I’ll never see you again?â€Â Rush: “Oh, I’ll be around. Wherever there’s a rich white guy in need of another tax break, I’ll be there.  Wherever there’s a brain dead woman in need of expensive life support her husband doesn’t want, I’ll be there.  Wherever there’s a country that needs to be invaded for reasons that don’t exactly pan out, I’ll be there too.â€Â It’s hard to understand Limbaugh’s motivation for agreeing to lend his name and his voice to a program that is dedicated to lambasting conservatives and their beliefs.  Perhaps he was looking for a little more personal fame, or perhaps he thought by joining the liberals in their own game that maybe they would change their prejudiced opinions of conservatives. However, in my view, Mr. Limbaugh’s appearance on Family Guy only helped to legitimize the crudity and skewed stereotypes that this show’s “humorâ€Â is based on.  One can’t wallow in the sewer and come out smelling like a rose.  Mr. Limbaugh did nothing to help promote conservative values, rather he undermined them.  And in the process, he came out more “chumpâ€Â than “champ.â€Â ======================================================= A classic resource available as short supply lasts: “The Holiness of Godâ€Â by R.C.
