Amazon at it again: Join the boycott

By: American Decency Staff

Amazon.com, the giant online book retailer, made news last week with the report that the company was selling an e-book advocating pedophilia, “The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure.â€ÂÂ   Many of you responded to our take action request and joined the chorus across the nation condemning Amazon for such a horrifying and irresponsible decision. While this one piece of trash has been removed from their website, something still stinks at Amazon.com.  Last week we reported that this wasn’t the first and only concern regarding Amazon.    The retailer has a history of selling material that encourages reprehensible, criminal acts – including rape and sexual abuse of children. Amazon has thumbed its nose at critics in the past when it was brought to light that they carried material from NAMBLA (North American Man Boy Love Association) – an organization promoting sex between adults and children.  That material is still available on Amazon. “… In 2002, the United States Justice Foundation, a conservative group, threatened to sue Amazon for selling "Understanding Loved Boys and Boylovers." That title is still available through Amazon. “In 2009, Amazon stopped selling "RapeLay," a first-person video game in which the protagonist stalks and then rapes a mother and her daughters, after it was widely condemned in the media and by various interest groups.â€Â http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/11/11/amazon-pulls-pedophile-guide-amid-outrage/ Now MSNBC reports that pornographic videos of girls as young as 11 years old are available on Amazon. “… Books and videos depicting pre-pubescent Eastern European and Asian girls, some of whom are nude, are listed for sale on Amazon in the U.S. and Japan, as of press time. “The listings are disturbing, as you may be able to sense even from the blurred item pictured above. (The MSNBC article included a blurred image for documentation.) Nudist videos from Eastern Europe appear on the U.S. Amazon retail site; meanwhile, books and videos that feature scantily clad pre-pubescent Eastern European and Asian girls, specifically stated by an independent website as being between the ages of 11 and 17, are listed on Amazon properties in Japan and elsewhere, and on Yahoo in Japan. That there are more books and videos of this nature on Amazon and other online retailers is highly likely.  … http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40137046/ns/technology_and_science-security According to child advocate James Marsh, a lawyer who works to protect and defend children victimized by child pornography (http://www.childlaw.us/), there is nothing innocent about these so-called nudist or naturist videos.  "We do see a big overlap between the child molesters and the so-called naturists. We have at least a couple of documented cases of public naturist advocates actually adopting and sexually abusing children for the purposes of child pornography."   Marsh also claims there are horrendous incidents in Eastern European countries where children are “rentedâ€Â from orphanages to be used for child pornography. Does Amazon not get it that these are real children who are being victimized?  Or do they just not care?  Amazon has defiantly defended their distribution of these materials that encourage perverts to prey upon children claiming it’s a matter of free speech.   However, as James Marsh stated in the article quoted above, "It's not about First Amendment rights.  It's about what material a good corporate citizen should be making available to the public. And that's the kind of decision Amazon should be making." However, Amazon has proven time and again that they are anything but a good corporate citizen.  They use a flimsy excuse to profit from the victimization of children, commercializing the sexual abuse of children callously and unapologetically.    Amazon is not a company worthy of support.  Please join us in boycotting Amazon.com and encourage others to do the same.  Amazon seems to turn a deaf ear to pleas to protect children; perhaps the only thing they’ll pay attention to is their bottom line. Take Action! Let Amazon know that you will not support a company that provides and defends material that encourages the abuse of children.  Click on the following link to contact Amazon, or use the information below to personally express your concern.
