Dear Mr. Goodell:
It is clear that you have picked sides in a divisive issue that has nothing to do with football. You chastised President Trump for showing a “lack of respect for the NFL,” yet you evidently have no problem with NFL players’ lack of respect for our national anthem and the men and women who fought and died under that banner. You claim that players have a right to express themselves, yet you denied the Dallas Cowboys the right to wear a helmet decal to honor five slain police officers and threatened to fine players for 9/11 tributes.
Just as you have requirements regarding excessive touchdown celebrations, you have the authority – and the duty – to require all players representing the NFL to stand for our national anthem. I urge you to do exactly that or risk the further alienation of millions of fans. As Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints stated: “…if you are an American the national anthem is an opportunity for us all to stand up together, to be unified and show respect for our country and to show respect for what it stands for.”
