Dear Sir:
Your mission statement declares your desire to “equip students to think deeply, to act justly, and to live wholeheartedly as Christ’s agents of renewal in the world.” That is an admirable, Biblical mission to which one would hope a Christian institution would adhere. It is with dismay, then, that I learned of the actions of Calvin Associate Professor Christopher Smit and his role in exploiting disabled individuals through a Down syndrome drag show at Project 1.
Using disabled individuals who lack the ability to grasp the complexity of the issues of gender and sexuality that they are being used to foment is NOT JUST and it certainly is not something which Christ would expect of His “agents of renewal.” Christ warns those who would stand behind the Drag Syndrome event that: “It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.” (Lk 17:2) Please consider these words of the Lord as you consider Professor Smit’s influence in your institution.
