I am appalled to learn the NFL rejected the “Please Stand” AMVETS ad for the 2018 Super Bowl. That simple, polite request to honor our nation’s flag and the men and women who served under that banner is not a political statement – rather it’s a sign of patriotism. It only became controversial when NFL players chose to turn that unifying moment at every game into a political protest.
As AMVETS National Commander, Marion Polk stated: "Freedom of speech works both ways. We respect the rights of those who choose to protest, as these rights are precisely what our members have fought – and in many cases died – for. But imposing corporate censorship to deny that same right to those veterans who have secured it for us all is reprehensible and totally beyond the pale."
Considering the plummeting ratings of the NFL, millions of Americans agree. If you’d like to win back the fans you lost, I urge to stop picking sides in a divisive issue that has nothing to do with football.
