Michigan: "Hate Crimes" Bill in House Judiciary Committee.
Hearing scheduled at State Capitol tomorrow morning (Wednesday, May 13).
10:30 A.M. at:
521 House Office Building
Lansing, MI
=======
I'm a Michigan citizen. I placed several calls yesterday to get some perspective
on House Bill No. 4836 - the Hates Crime Bill.
The Michigan House is controlled by Democrats - 67 to 43.
The Judiciary Committee is therefore overwhelmingly Democrat. House Bill No.
4836 likely will be voted out of committee tomorrow.
Michigan's Governor is Jennifer Granholm, a liberal Democrat. It is
very much anticipated that if this bill ever reached her desk, she would sign
it into law.
HOWEVER. The Michigan Senate is controlled by the Republicans by
a narrow margin of (21-17). It is headed by Senate Majority Leader
Michael Bishop (Rochester, MI). In the early 2000s, I had the opportunity
to have anti-pornography legislation in his committee when he was a member
of the House of Representatives. He led his committee forthrightly and with
integrity.
I say this to say that as Gary Bauer says: "Elections have consequences."
If Michigan's Senate was also controlled by liberals, we would be in a world
of hurt here in Michigan.
Nonetheless, we can't afford to take anything for granted. If you live in
Michigan, it is a good time to contact your state representative today as
there is some speculation that the Michigan State House could take up the
"Hates Crime" bill in the afternoon after it passes out of the House
Judiciary Committee.
