April 27, 2009
Saturday afternoon I visited one of my favorite warriors in the fight
against pornography. She is in the 80 year old range probably weighing 80
pounds. She headed the Morality in Media of Muskegon from 1985 or so through
2007.
Loretta Detamore is at a seniors facility and was laying down in her
bed when my wife and I visited her. I asked "How are you dear friend?"
She said "I have no complaints" - with a sweet smile on her face.
What a dear saint of God! No complaints though there she is so very much
on the sidelines. One of her first questions of me was "How is it going
out there in the fight? I think of you so often."
And, I'm sure she does inspite of her depressing situation.
What a faithful Christian woman she has been - hosting White Ribbons Against
Pornography rallies, hosting annual conferences featuring such speakers as
MIM's President Bob Peters, Alan Sears when he headed Citizens for Decency
Through Law in Phoenix, AZ, Art Ally, President of the Timothy Plan, Richard
Thompson, former Oakland County Prosecutor (MI) and others, picketing Family
Video, meeting faithfully and regularly urging her county prosecutor Tony
Tague in Muskegon County (MI) to enforce the laws against pornography.
Yet, she pointed to the Lord - having the victory in Him despite all the
discouragement surrounding her. Loretta's words "I have no complaints".
Many, many times I saw Loretta as the Christian activist. Saturday, I saw
her needy physically but mighty in spirit.
I have been inspired by her as an activist but no less so in her state of
physical affliction and need.
Many Scriptural verses come to mind but the following struck me as especially
on point:
"For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the
victory that has overcome the world-- even our faith." I John 5:4.
Not one of us knows what our future holds but we know who holds the future.
Loretta's life is a beacon of hope to me. If I ever have to be similarly placed
as Loretta, I hope that I will answer similarly with sweetness and assurance:
"I have no complaints."
