Today’s youth culture is filled with entertainment choices which encourage promiscuity, telling young people if “you’re not ‘doing it,’ there’s something wrong with you” – a message delivered each week on “Glee” to its young audience of teens and preteens.  We’ve made the case time and time again that the Fox show, “Glee,” is unfit for family viewing.

While you might hear a sugary Justin Bieber song performed on the show, the storylines and themes are far more illicit than innocent.

Advertisers include:  Burger King, Arby’s, Wendy’s, Old Navy, Procter & Gamble (Pampers), Lowe’s, Chili’s, Ford, Visa, Samsung, Microsoft/IPhone, Verizon, and Walt Disney Pictures.

With reoccurring homosexual themes and sexual situations among the teenage characters on “Glee,” this latest episode gave more of the same.  Two teen boys are in a homosexual relationship and are shown kissing.  One of these boys – still in high school – admitted he “hooked up” for sex with yet another boy, stating:  “It didn’t mean anything, it was just a hook up.  I needed someone.” 

Two bisexual/lesbian teen girls are also shown kissing multiple times, once stating:  “This is where we fell in love.”

Oh, but Glee doesn’t just promote homosexual sex among teens.  In the interest of “equal opportunity” a heterosexual teen couple is also shown in bed together.

However, that “equal treatment” doesn’t apply to Christians or conservatives.  As with the other Ryan Murphy-produced show “The New Normal” Murphy portrays one of his Glee high school characters as a Christian Republican.  Of course she is the high school “mean girl” who humiliates her unpopular classmates.  She forms a “Christian” Left Behind/Rapture club which Glee’s creator, Ryan Murphy, uses to mock Christianity and portray Christians as whack-jobs.

While millions of youth (and their parents) follow this pop culture phenomenon, it is encouraging to hear from readers that the information we provide has made an impact in their lives and their decision-making.  A couple of years ago we received this powerful account which we pulled from the archives to encourage you in your own pursuit of holiness and to urge you to be salt and light!

“I just wanted to thank you for writing the article on "Glee" … I'm a Christian & I've been watching that show since it debuted last year.  However, for quite awhile now I've been praying about if I should continue to watch it or not, & I was even wondering recently if you'd be singling out that show for readers to take "action" against.  (I considered e'g you to suggest that you tackle that show, but then I rec'd your email re: it!!)  After reading your excellent article, I felt confirmation that the Lord was indeed telling me to stop watching (i.e. supporting) it.  I then felt led to send out an email (see copy below) to all my friends re: "Glee" (& I included at the bottom your email that you sent out).  I've rec'd only positive responses from friends so far, thanking me for sending it out...one went so far as to say that she was going to post my email on Facebook!  So maybe that'll help our cause.  …

Subj: This Christian's Take on "GLEE"

 Hey, everyone,

“I don't know about you, but I loved "Glee" in the beginning 'cuz of my singing background.  I was hopeful that this new variety/character-driven series would stand out from the rest & be a safe, clean show for families.  However, the producers have increasingly gone over the edge re: homosexuality, sex, suggestive songs/dances, etc. with every new episode, especially in this 2nd season.  I wrote to Fox & creator Ryan Murphy & asked them to do something about cleaning up the show, but obviously nothing has been done.  I gave it one more chance last week but, again, I was appalled & saddened at the content. 

“So now I choose to take a stand & obey God by NOT WATCHING THIS SHOW ANYMORE.  I hope you'll join me.  I have to admit that it was a hard decision because "Glee" really appeals to me, so I kept telling myself, "Well, maybe it won't be so bad next week."  I realized how easy it is to get caught up in the excitement of a "song & dance" series like this, but God is teaching me more & more that we Christians (at the risk of being labeled "prudes") need to be ever mindful of what we allow to permeate our hearts & minds, & we should especially protect our kids.  The media these days seeks to undermine our morals & get us so used to seeing homosexuality, polygamy, profanity & immorality as supposedly "normal" in day-to-day life & families that we become desensitized to it.  And - sad to say - it's working...the devil is wearing us down.
