I love a song by “Casting Crown” called “If We’ve Ever Needed You.” The opening lines get to the essence of it early. It goes like this:
Here I cry, Lord we pray. Our faces down, our hands are raised. You called us out. We turned away. We’ve turned away.
With shipwrecked faith the idols rise. We do what’s right in our own eyes. Our children now will pay the price.
We need Your light. Lord, shine Your light.

To my generation, December 7th is simply the day after December 6th and before December 8th. But to many of what is recognized as “the greatest generation,” the date harbors painful memories and deep emotions.
It’s usually not until I hear a piece on the radio or catch a news headline that I remember it’s Pearl Harbor Day – the beginning of America’s involvement in World War II and, more importantly, the day that 2,400 Americans lost their lives.

As we go into this Labor Day holiday, some will go with such high expectations – especially the young and the naïve of heart. Their anticipation is that all is supposed to go without difficulty. My Dad used to say to my mother “Donna, life is not a bowl full of cherries.”
I used to take that all in as a youngster. Now over the years I have discovered that in this broken world we ourselves are broken and are immersed in brokenness and fallenness.
As you go into this “holiday”, be mindful of that reality and that Satan is lurking about seeking whom he may devour. For the believer, though, God uses difficulties and hardships to make us more like him. Whatever, be on guard as you go and go asking for God’s helping hand.
