Victoria’s Secret – a change of direction?

February 29, 2008

Victoria’s Secret – a change of direction? A return to sanity? Let’s pray so!

It annoys me when a speaker in trying to get my attention says, “HELLO!” However, …

HELLO! Yesterday, a shocking word came out from the chief executive of the Victoria’s Secret lingerie chain. Sharon Turney, CEO of Victoria’s Secret admitted the brand has become “too sexy”. Further, she states that Victoria’s Secret “has gotten off our heritage.”

The article states that “malls routinely endure protests from parents who are outraged by the store window displays.”

Do you remember that we have been beating the drum for people to divest from the Limited? Again and again and again.

Then note this – Standard & Poor’s (S&P) ratings warned it may cut the credit rating of Limited Brands to junk status because of growing concern about the company’s debt.

Lastly, my concern is that there is little to no sense of exuberance regarding this statement by Victoria’s Secret. Sure, the proof is in the pudding. Nonetheless, it is significant when you read the article thoughtfully.

** VS CEO states VS has become too sexy
** VS wants to bring back more sophisticated, higher quality products back
** VS is in serious financial trouble

Does speaking up, demonstrations – such as those by ladies in Carmel, Indiana and elsewhere – make a difference?

Does responding to our action alerts make a difference? Such as divesting from Victoria’s Secret.

Finally, the fight is a fight that needs to be fought, but it’s hard, thankless and lonely.
We had one person comment and only one media opportunity (CNN) which we missed as I was on an airplane. It’s too early to give up, even when you have to stand alone.
