Strange bedfellows

By: American Decency Staff

In the latest episode of the Twilight Zone, aka “following politicsâ€Â, we introduce the prime example of strange bedfellows: Rush Limbaugh and the show Family Guy. Limbaugh, widely recognized as a champion of the conservative movement, will be featured in this Sunday’s episode of Family Guy, a show known for its vulgar humor and calloused mockery of all things sacred – particularly traditional American values. The “edgy humorâ€Â of Family Guy and its sister show American Dad has crossed the line of decency time and time again.  Some of the topics have been “Terri Schiavo: The Musicalâ€Â, making fun of Sarah Palin’s Downs Syndrome child, a man pleasuring a horse, a teenage boy watching strippers via webcam, etc. "'Family Guy' tends to be very liberal because it's written by liberals," creator Seth MacFarlane said.  "So we thought let's give the other side some face time.  So we put it out there to a lot of Republicans — 'we're doing this show, who wants in?' Limbaugh says he came out “looking like a champ on this thingâ€Â and “if you can’t laugh at yourself, there’s no reason to be alive.â€Â  As to the show in general, “it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.  I mean, this program crosses the line every night that it’s onâ€Â but, “they didn’t put any curse words or foul mouth in my script.â€Â  In reply to a caller who said “Some people have no sense of humorâ€Â Rush said, “Some people do have legitimate concerns about moral depravity that is being foisted on the culture.â€Â So while Rush gets it, he really doesn’t get it… While Rush certainly is not always a paragon of virtue, or even a staunch defender of all social issues important to the family, those of us in the conservative movement expect more.  Family Guy regularly and seemingly with malice trashes the values and beliefs of millions – blaspheming Christ, degrading women, exposing viewers (of which many are youth) to vile sexual verbiage and innuendo.  And, as its own creator, Seth MacFarlane, implies, Family Guy is bent on promoting the liberal view while mocking all things and all persons conservative.  So while MacFarlane is throwing a bone to the conservatives, Rush is jumping to catch it.  And in doing so has caused this conservative to wonder if media attention is more important to him than the values of millions of his listeners.
