“… AND THE WINNER IN THE ‘I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY PUT THAT FILTH ON THE AIR’ CATEGORY: …”

October 10, 2003

5. “Happy Family”: Arguably the two best actors in television (Jon
Larroquette and Catherine Baranski) get together to do a show about the most dysfunctional family in existence. The oldest son has a wife AND a
mistress, and the younger son is a total loser who spends his time sleeping with the next door neighbor, making the point that it is better to sponge off an older woman as opposed to working for a living. …it is very very subtle in its approach to values. Making decent values seem outmoded is the weapon of choice of the media.

4. “The OC”: Short for Orange County, should be a wonderful drama about a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, moving into a nice neighborhood with his lawyer and discovering how the other half lives. Unfortunately all the other half seems to do is imbibe and fornicate. Great message for our teens on what type of lives to lead…..NOT.

3. “Las Vegas”: Do not even begin to think this show is just about gambling. It promotes the cheap sex, free money, mafia run lifestyle portrayed in such movies as Casino.

2. “Coupling”: A remake of a British show that should have stayed in Britain, where full frontal nudity is allowed and good taste is optional.

AND THE WINNER IN THE “I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY PUT THAT FILTH ON THE AIR”
CATEGORY:

1. “Skin”: Pornographer (portrayed as misunderstood businessman) has a
daughter. District Attorney has a son. They begin dating much to the
chagrin of their families. Romeo and Juliet goes soft porn. It barely squeaks past ‘Coupling’ as the most offensive show on television.

TARGET RESPONSE REGARDING THEIR ADVERTISING ON LAS VEGAS –
CONTENT OF LAS VEGAS:

http://www.americandecency.org/lasvegas10.06.03.htm

Dear …

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the Target advertisement that aired
during Las Vegas on NBC.
The purchase of commercial airtime is a complicated process. As a matter of course, Target contracts with each television network to communicate our needs. Each network then provides us with a block of programming time.
Whenever we purchase airtime, we do our best to reach a specific audience
that most closely matches the Target customer profile in gender and age
range.
We understand that specific programs may occasionally contain content that is objectionable and I apologize that you were offended by advertising on Las Vegas. We are always looking for ways to make the Target shopping experience better for every guest. With your concerns in mind, your comments will be made available to our executives in the broadcast area.
We value you as our guest and hope that Target will continue to be one of
your shopping destinations.
Sincerely,
Claudia Elsham

ADA COMMENTS ON TARGET LETTER:
They may want us to think it is complicated but how complicated is it to simply say “We don’t want our advertisements to run on trashy shows?” It isn’t complicated at all. Corporations do say no to trash. Thousands of advertisers said NO to the Stern show once they received our letter(s)
urging them not to empower trash. TARGET has the capability of saying no to trashy shows. Sure they would like to reach a large number of potential shoppers but they also know that if they go too far they risk turning off customers – those of us who care about building up rather than tearing down the moral base of our children and families.

ADA COMMENTS ON TARGET LETTER:
Target offers gracious words as a peace offering but if they can get away with sponsoring filthy shows like this they will continue.

Let TARGET hear from you.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Mr.Ulrich:

I’m displeased with your letter of response regarding Target’s advertising on NBC’s Las Vegas.
I know that you desire to reach as many prospective customers as possible, but at what cost? You will find new customers but you will also lose some as you sponsor filthy programming.
I am writing to let you know that I am one of a large group of shoppers who will not shop stores that help degrade our nation’s airwaves and thereby our children and families by empowering morally bankrupt programming.
I await your response as I consider whether I will or will not be a
Target shopper.
Sincerely,
