“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” a romantic comedy? Yeah right.

Last week I encouraged you to see the movie “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed”. This week I bring warning of a much different movie currently in theaters. The movie, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is being touted as “hilarious”, “utterly delightful”. One typical review stated: “ ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ is the kind of smart and satisfying movie you’ll watch over and over without feeling guilty.” Perhaps those with a deadened conscience. The movie, portrayed as a romantic comedy, is in reality nothing more than raunchy pornography.

Because of the gushing reviews and the description of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” as a romantic comedy, many, including target audiences of teens and young adults, will overlook the R rating and make a decision to see this movie. After all, how concerning can a “romantic comedy” be?

In this case, very concerning. A perusal of the content of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” from www.screenit.com, a web site designed to make parents and concerned moviegoers aware of concerning movie content, reveals this the film is littered with dozens and dozens of profanities, crudities, and obscenities.

In the review (see http://www.screenit.com/movies/2008/forgetting_sarah_marshall.html) profanity is rated as extreme with at least 33 uses of the “f”-word, in addition to dozens of other profanities. Sex/nudity is also rated as extreme with full frontal male nudity and many graphic and explicit depictions of sex acts.

This movie continues Hollywood’s quest to push the envelope further and further. Full-frontal male nudity/genitalia, even in an R-rated film, would not have been tolerated ten or fifteen years ago. Yet this movie contains numerous such depictions. This film is another example of the rapid coarsening of our culture. As a film of such a graphic sexual nature is not only accepted, but also raved about shows how far we have fallen.

Lastly, a tangible way of standing for Truth –

In October 2006, Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel announced the “One a Month Campaign”, one commandment per month beginning in January 2007. But it doesn’t matter when you join. Just match the Commandment with the current month (e.g. Feb = 2nd, June = 6th, etc).
I believe the idea of America being on the “same page” could be powerful. God’s Word does not return empty. Churches could participate by informing their congregations. Para-church organizations could gain energy and momentum for their causes. Individuals have an opportunity to make a personal statement of convictions.
